How your behaviour has a bottom line effect

Behaviour


You're a leader, an entrepreneur, an intrapreneur, or a freelancer. You have goals, or ambitions, for yourself or for your activities. So you can precisely say why you are doing everything you do, and where you want to get with your activities.
It can be as small as a freelancer who wants to make 500€ extra a month, or as big as an entrepreneur who wants to expand his business with another million in revenue.

The fact is that we all have a reason why we do what we do.
An interesting question however is whether the daily behaviour we show is actually in line with that overall goal or not?

If it is in line, then chances are pretty high you will actually achieve your goal.
If it is not in line, then you are limiting yourself.

In that case, you can discover in this blog what you can do about it.

"Every leader has the organization he/she deserves!"

This is a quote I regularly use to indicate the importance of your own behaviour.
With everything you do, ! and with everything you don't do !, you set an example.
The people in your team/organization will follow that example.
Some will follow the example very rigorously, others are a bit more rebellious but even then you still set the borders of what is accepted and what is not.

It even goes beyond the borders of your company. Every interaction you have with a client or with a supplier will have an effect on them and so also on how they interact with your company.
Even if you don't interact with them directly, your representatives are still influenced by your behaviour.

This is also called 'the rose of Leary': every behaviour that you show generates a certain behaviour of the person you interact with.
'Leading' behaviour stimulates 'following' behaviour; 'following' behaviour stimulates 'leading' behaviour; 'positive' stimulates 'positive'; 'negative' stimulates 'negative'.

So if you want to reach something, you will have to be very sure that the behaviours you show are in line with what you want to achieve!

Now how to approach that for yourself?
Well, there are some theoretical models that can help you with that (like for example 'the rose of Leary' like indicated above, or the 'WHY-HOW-WHAT' model). But beside those models, I personally believe that identification is one of the most important steps in this.

Take a role model, an example, a metaphor, or a specific description that -for you- is completely in line with what you want to achieve, and start to act like that thing you just planted in your mind.
For example:
With such an ' I am...' statement in your mind, it becomes much easier to constantly display the desired behaviour that is in line with the goals you want to reach.
And like mentioned above: your behaviour generates behaviour within others, so your 'I am...' statement will generate exactly those results you want to achieve, even on your financial bottom line!

This all makes that your behaviour is not an effect of the things you achieve, but a place to come from if you want to achieve them!

And that's the exercise you can do for yourself right now:
Imagine that you would have reached the goal you're striving for, then which behaviour would you probably display in that moment of success?
Make that image as clear as possible for yourself, and then start showing that behaviour right away!
Because that is the behaviour that will generate your desired results!
